Everett, Jane

Jane Everett’s adopted home in the interior of British Columbia and the intersection between the man-made and natural worlds together form the recurrent focus of her practice in both drawing and painting. Essentially a study of light as it elucidates or obscures form, her work is always landscape based. Everett’s work has been exhibited across the country in private and public galleries and has expanded to the visuals for Ballet Kelowna’s Macbeth, and Saskatoon’s Nuit Blanche and Artsco’s Light Up Kelowna. Everett did her Fine Arts degree at Queen’s University.

The human touch, the act of mark making, has become more precious in a digital world. This group of waterscapes is part of her Raindance series – a hopeful response to the devastating fires that increasingly mark summer in the West. Loosely based on the waters at the mouth of Onyx Creek where it drains into Shuswap Lake, the paintings are soaked in light. The movement of the water is punctuated by the reeds and rushes that pierce the surface of the water and undulate in reflection. This is a place I frequently explore in my kayak on spring and summer mornings.

The multiple effects of sunlight on water engender a deep atavistic response in human beings. Much has been written on why this is so but my interest in this, as the nexus of our connection to the natural world and our outsized impact on it, is at the heart of my practice, finding the crack where the light pours in.
