Barrie Szekely’s painting practice began with a simple curiosity about the contents of a tube of oil paint. This curiosity has led him to explore the abundance of tools, applications, ingredients, formulas, its messiness and the rich history associated with painting, creating a platform for the challenges involved in developing an image.
Oil paint allows Barrie to be noncommittal, to add and remove elements, while constantly asking himself, “What if I did this?” This iterative process gradually develops the content of his practice.
Barrie has had the privilege of attending the University of Regina (BFA), The Banff Centre (Winter and Spring Residencies), and the University of Victoria (MFA). His work is featured in both private and public collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank, Prudential Insurance Company of America, and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
